A4 flavour symmetry breaking scheme for understanding quark and neutrino mixing angles

چکیده
Abstract: We propose a spontaneous A4 flavour symmetry breaking scheme to understand the observed pattern of quark and neutrino mixing. The fermion mass eigenvalues are arbitrary, but the mixing angles are constrained in such a way that the overall patterns are explained while also leaving sufficient freedom to fit the detailed features of the observed values, including CP-violating phases. The scheme realises the proposal of Low and Volkas to generate zero quark mixing and tribimaximal neutrino mixing at tree level, with deviations from both arising from small corrections after spontaneous A4 breaking. In the neutrino sector, the breaking is A4 → Z2, while in the quark and charged-lepton sectors it is A4 → Z3 ∼= C3. The full theory has A4 completely broken, but the two different unbroken subgroups in the two sectors force the dominant mixing patterns to be as stated above. Radiative effects within each sector are shown to deviate neutrino mixing from tribimaximal, while maintaining zero quark mixing. Interactions between the two sectors – “cross-talk” – induce nonzero quark mixing, and additional deviation from tribimaximal neutrino mixing. We discuss the vacuum alignment challenge the scenario faces, and suggest three generic ways to approach the problem. We follow up one of those ways by sketching how an explicit model realising the symmetry breaking structure may be constructed.

Minimal Mixing of Quarks and Leptons in the SU ( 3 ) Theory of Flavour
We argue that flavour mixing, both in the quark and lepton sector, follows the minimal mixing pattern, according to which the whole of this mixing is basically determined by the physical mass generation for the first family of fermions. So, in the chiral symmetry limit when the masses of the lightest (u and d) quarks vanish, all the quark mixing angles vanish. This minimal pattern is shown to f...
متن کاملTri-bimaximal Neutrino Mixing and Quark Masses from a Discrete Flavour Symmetry
We build a supersymmetric model of quark and lepton masses based on the discrete flavour symmetry group T , the double covering of A4. In the lepton sector our model is practically indistinguishable from recent models based on A4 and, in particular, it predicts a nearly tri-bimaximal mixing, in good agreement with present data. In the quark sector a realistic pattern of masses and mixing angles...
متن کاملThe double mass hierarchy pattern: simultaneously understanding quark and lepton mixing
The charged fermion masses of the three generations exhibit the two strong hierarchiesm3 ≫ m2 ≫ m1. We assume that also neutrino masses satisfy mν3 > mν2 > mν1 and derive the consequences of the hierarchical spectra on the fermionic mixing patterns. The quark and lepton mixing matrices are built in a general framework with their matrix elements expressed in terms of the four fermion mass ratios...
متن کاملFermion Masses and Mixing Angles from SU (3) Family Symmetry and Unification
We develop a bottom-up approach to constructing a theory of fermion masses and mixing angles based on the gauge group SU(3) × G where SU(3) is a family symmetry and G contains a unified group such as SO(10) or its Pati-Salam subgroup, together with other discrete symmetries. We construct a realistic model and show that it can provide an excellent description of quark and lepton masses and mixin...
متن کاملSymmetries and fermion masses
We discuss whether quark, charged lepton and neutrino masses and mixing angles may be related by an extended flavour and family symmetry group. We show that current measurements of all fermion masses and mixing angles are consistent with a combination of an underlying SU(3) family symmetry together with a GUT symmetry such as SO(10). In this the near bi-maximal mixing observed in the neutrino s...
